Pilsen Academy of Young diplomats 2016

About

November 28 – 30, 2016

PILSEN

Pilsen Academy of Young diplomats 2016 is a project focused on untraditional education of high school and university students from all over the Czech Republic. Through the United Nations (UN) model using the most realistic simulation possible, it aims to raise awareness about the UN among students and the general public. During the simulation of the meeting of the UN organs the participants will be apprised of the current international events and global issues, they will gain a better insight and a better understanding of politics and foreign affairs of particular countries and they will experience on their own that the problems, which are being discussed in the real UN, are not by far as black and white as they might seem.

Project PAYD also works on the students‘ soft skills, meaning their public speaking, etiquette knowledge, their ability to find consensus and compromise, teamwork, justifying their own or someone else’s opinion or their spoken and also written language. Together with the chance to meet significant figures from various fields and to make contacts, the project lays the groundwork for its participants‘ future career lives even beyond the borders of diplomacy.

Agenda

The maximum capacity of delegates participating in the simulation of the meeting of the United Nations organs in the first year of the student-led educational project Pilsen academy of Young diplomats was set at 45 students from both high schools and universities. The delegates were divided into two UN organs, which we chose primarily taking into account the individual organs‘ diversity as far as their specialization is concerned and taking into account their significance in the UN structure itself.

Security Council

The Security Council (UNSC) is focused on participants who are interested in international security and solving armed conflicts. The UNSC is one of the main UN organs and the only UN organ with the authority to issue binding resolutions.

Discussed points of the agenda:

  • The situation in the Middle East
  • Security Council reform

Economic and Social Council

The simulation of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is intended for students who are interested not only in economics but also in human rights and their interconnection. ECOSOC belongs to the main UN organs.

Discussed points of the agenda:

  • Minimizing oil price volatility
  • Preventing youth radicalization
